Last year we reviewed the €1'995 Mytek Brooklyn DAC and liked it for both its sound quality and versatility. Now Mytek designer Michal Jurewicz presents a scaled-down version of it. Again named after an iconic part of his hometown of New York City, it is the Liberty DAC; yes, after that statue. With the downsizing, the price tag lost a digit and its first '1' and we were curious what that would mean for its sound quality and versatility. So when Mytek asked us to review it, we were eager to agree.

From the delivered box we extracted a 1kg light 20x14x4 cm sized DAC in black. The top plate sported the distinctive M amid a plenitude of small holes to keep things cool. The front panel had a 6.3mm headphone output followed by a sextet of indicator LEDs each with multiple purposes and colours. When orange, the first LED from the left indicates PCM. White is for DSD, green signifies the presence of MQA-encoded signal. Actual processing of MQA, meaning that a control has been passed which validates said MQA content as being approved by the copyright owner, is indicated when this LED turns a bright blue.
